I hope you didn’t take my comment to mean I’m belittling your abilities,” she continues with a little more directness. “From what I understand all this was possible only through your intel. I only meant that few could of endured what you have. I don’t know exactly what happened out there but I’m sure it’s nice to finally be home, so to speak.” That was mostly speculation on her part but, surely, it had to be better than living a lie like that for so long?
In truth, he hadn’t given all that much thought to what had transpired. He couldn’t really. The details of it always felt distant, scattered, just outside his reach regardless of how he tried to grasp them. It was better that way, he’d told himself. There still remained too many inconsistencies. Too many peculiarities. By all rights he shouldn’t still be there, but there he was regardless.
